I do…do you?

First event!
This week has been crazy busy, but nothing really exciting except for that I had my first small event. Jazz in the Cabaret was on Tuesday night and my little committee was so cute. It was great! Great food, great music, great-ness!
So this was the craziest week for there to have been only one show. Ben Folds 5 came to UNC for a historic reunion concert as a part of MySpace’s front to back tour. This has been ridiculous. Tickets sold out online in a record 2 minutes. I was excited (obviously not as excited as some people) but I was excited. Until I worked with Mr. Ben Folds. The actual performance was awesome…but those guys are crazy. First of all, the don’t talk to each other…at all! It was really awkward. They were all just going their separate ways and doing their own thing when they weren’t rehearsing. They reserved Memorial Hall two days before the show for rehearsals but they didn’t rehearse on the first day that they reserved the venue because they refused to get off of their tour bus. According to the “rain clause” in their contract, they don’t have to unload or get off their tour bus if it is raining outside…no matter how physically close they are to the indoor venue. They’re such DIVAS!!! I was worried but everything came together really nicely and the energy-level in there was unreal. Having the myspace crane in there hovering and panning the crowd was kinda weird. All in all it was intensely awesome :) I shot right home for appointments on Friday then I went to Muzak Summer Jam on Saturday :) Good food, cool peeps, good times. I brought my cousin Tristan and I ended up running into Brittany Kerr of all people and her family! Crazy small world!

Whew!
What a week!
Thomas’ campaign meeting (first one!) went smoothly. We’re going to have to chat bout his diversity on staff. I’m so excited for/proud of him!
The Small Town Records General Body Meeting was pretty cool. Nothing heavy. I have a small committee for marketing…but I’m pretty sure I won’t need them
I could get used to these CUAB Board Meetings. They’re fun! People just propose something and we approve. We’ll see how long this bliss lasts.
The Boston Consulting Group came this week to take some Robertson and Morehead Scholars to cocktails at 411 West. All these people want to do is drink in suits! There were 5 of them there to entertain, wine, and dine us. Tools. Drunk tools at that. Annalee and I went. We left early. Free dinner is always a plus. Can’t say I’m “excited.”
Mansion 462 is such a cool place. I met with Brad again to discuss logistics and costs for my birthday party. Also trying to firm up a date. He’s so cool. We’ll have a good time
Thursday night was interesting and sad. Metallica released an album on an off-day (Friday) as they haven’t had one in some time. I helped SchoolKids Records in Raleigh with a midnight release listening party and sale. Turnout was horrible. They just asked for my help to staff it. They didn’t ask me to help promote it…obviously. They played the album in its entirety and then at midnight they started letting patrons purchase the new album. They had pizza and drinks and everything. Like 6 people showed. Poor Ric. I’m hoping this store doesn’t have to close its doors too.
I think the most bizarre occurrence this week was interviewing a candidate for summer director with the Robertson Scholars Program. This lady was weird AND a UNC alum AND a former CUAB-er. Nancy didn’t have the best things to say about her. We went to eat at Spanky’s. Me, Annalee, John, and Alexis. I don’t think Ms. Fox is going to win this one.
Jobs
Lately I’ve really been feeling the pressure to get a job set up for after I graduate. I don’t think my mother understands that the jobs that I want wouldn’t consider hiring someone right now. In entertainment, they want you there like yesterday once they bring you on board. I met with Rebecca Knicely from Teach for America earlier this week. This is like the 4th time I’ve met with her in the past year.
TFA once seemed like a ridiculous option for me until I really thought about it. Almost every summer I’ve been alive I’ve dedicated a big part of it to working with children or young adults…teaching them something. I’ve taught various subjects in a classroom setting before. Considering all of this…maybe it’s not so ridiculous? It’s something I’ll keep in mind.
The All Scholars meeting on Friday was…interesting. It was at Duke..surprise. Tony introduced Doug as the head of his new incubator…whatever that means. He also introduced some research specialist who is now on board…Vicki Stocking. I’ll reserve my comments. Most exciting was John’s darting out of there before dinner announcing that tonight was “the” night. He’s going to propose to Aynara! Again…comments reserved!
Time flies…
It’s been a long time since my last post…it’s been a long week or so. One of my best friends was admitted to the Emergency Room and then moved to the ICU with a very severe case of malaria. Student Health had told her the week before that she had the flu and that she would be fine with some Motrin and rest. When she was found by a mutual friend she was almost comatose. 60% of people with cases as severe as hers end up dead. It’s scary how close she came. She’s recuperating at home in New Jersey for the next week or so.
Between that and preparing for the CUAB retreat over labor Day weekend (which was awesome) there just hasn’t been enough time. On the upside of things, I think progress is being made on an on-campus contest for tickets to the Black Kids/The Virgins show at Cat’s Cradle. I’m also working on a few CUAB proposals and a doors event with Murs for WMG. Lots going on and lots to do…starting with homework!
